Exploring Family-Friendly Fine Dining in Vancouver

Family Fun in Vancouver on a Rainy Day

My daughter looking out a rainy window, reflecting curiosity and the cozy atmosphere of a rainy day.

It’s a rainy day in the Lower Mainland, and you’re looking for something to do with your baby or toddler. Have you ever thought about venturing out to Vancouver Airport for a fine dining experience at The Fairmont? There are so many wonderful aspects to this outing that I’d love to share from my recent visit with my daughter. This activity can fit a budget range of $50 to over $100, including transportation. It’s easily accessible by car or the SkyTrain. The SkyTrain can easily turn into a core childhood memory for your little one. This experience is such an amazing activity for West Coast lovers. You can enjoy the scenic views of the North Shore mountain range. YVR sits on the traditional, ancestral and unceded territory of the Musqueam people. Which the menu is inspired by Pacific Northwest flavours including a bannock dish that donates back $1 from each item sold to the Indian Residential School Survivors Society.

Oh, & one of the best parts? The YVR airport is beautifully decorated with Christmas Trees.

Family Fine Dining at Fairmont YVR

Dining at a fine restaurant can actually be a wonderful experience for young children. The more relaxed atmosphere encourages families to take their time, allowing kids to explore new flavors and textures without the pressure of a rushed meal.

Fine dining establishments often provide high-quality, fresh ingredients, which can lead to healthier options for children. Moreover, the attention to detail in service makes for a pleasant experience, as staff are typically more accommodating to families, ensuring that parents can enjoy their meals while children remain engaged and entertained. The entire atmosphere made the whole experience very pleasant & fun for my adventurous toddler. Having space in the lobby & hallways was perfect for allowing her to stretch her legs before the meal. The washrooms were very luxurious with stalls that were full walls & doors making it much easier if you want to venture out as a single parent.

Family Fun at Vancouver Airport With West Coast Views

The location of The Fairmont YVR is fantastic for little ones, as they can watch airplanes take off and land right from their seats in the restaurant. This unique aspect adds an exciting element to the dining experience, keeping kids captivated by the hustle and bustle of the airport below. Additionally, the entrance to the restaurant features a stunning glass bridge with an impressive overhang of lighting.

This was one of my daughter’s favorite parts, as she loved looking down at the airport, taking in all the lights, people, and the lively atmosphere.

No matter the weather the views are stunning. Some days you may see the mountain ranges of the North Shore. Other days it may be all moody clouds, heavy rain, & mist blocking everything out.

A kind waiter told me that the views of the sunset were to die for. It’s absolutely now in my bucket list to come watch the sunset at the strategically placed view from the Globe at YVR dining area. As an artist who lives for sunsets & watching the stunning painting of light, colour, & the symbolism of a new era; I know this would be a must see location. My final opinion is that no matter the weather scene that you get to watch, there is beauty in everything. Every weather & view combination you may get to witness would embody the beauty of the West Coast.

Toddler Approved Local in Season Food in Vancouver

The Kabocha Squash Soup was a standout dish that ignited a unique flavor profile, offering a warm and comforting essence that washed away the chill of the winter rain. Its delicate balance of sweetness and spice, enhanced by a dollop of cardamom crème on top, created a truly delightful experience. The pumpkin seeds added a wonderful crunch, making it a perfect alternative to croutons for those who are gluten-free.

I couldn’t resist indulging in the grilled cheese sandwich, especially when I learned it included mayonnaise—an ultimate comfort food for me, passed down from my great-grandmother, Anne. It was the perfect rainy-day treat. For my daughter, we ordered the macaroni and cheese, which came in a generous portion. The cheese blend was simply divine! Macaroni & cheese is another long time family favourite enjoyed at every favourite. As with the weather being that of heavy rain; our choices were drawn to comfort food items. One that was not regretted at all. I’ll be trying to figure out how to recreate that soup at home, as it hit my soul in all the right places.

My mother joined us and chose the hummus with Greek salad, which featured finely chopped salad atop the hummus, providing a lovely texture contrast.

To finish off strong we had the Bannock Rolls. It was a no brainer when we saw that $1 from each roll is donated back to an amazing non-profit. The Chili Maple Syrup provided yet another amazing synergistic combination of sweet & savoury. The bannock was fluffy & perfectly fried; but not overly oily.

I genuinely appreciate that the menu is seasonal, ethical, sustainable, and locally sourced—values that are important to me. Feel free to view the menu here.

Fine Art, Fine Dining, & Family Memories

The entire fine dining experience was exceptional, even with a toddler in tow. The food arrived promptly, a welcome bonus when dining with young children. The hotel lobby provided a space for my little one to move around before and after our meal, which was a huge plus. The bathrooms were impressively designed, with each stall as a private room, making it much easier for parents on solo outings with kids.

We also enjoyed exploring the beautiful art collection of local landscapes and flora on display, which kept my daughter entertained as she admired the painting throughout the lobby.

They are painted by the amazing Bronwen Belenkie, who does live paintings in the lobby Thursdays 10:00am – 12:30 pm.
